Chapter Eighteen

“OH, NO,” SAGE groaned before she turned to Shea who was eying her strappy white mud-covered sandals with dismay. “How are you here?”

“Good question.” Shea shrugged. “Not that I’m complaining.” She held up a sandal with disgust. “Mostly.” She sighed and pulled off the other one before heading for the water. “One second I was standing there stunned by the state of the ash back home, then I was here.” She made a dismissive flourish with her hand before she crouched and dunked her shoes in the water. “Well, close to here. Through the woods and muck a ways.”

Not surprisingly, Shea didn’t seem thrown in the least that she had traveled back in time over a thousand years. But then, like Sage, her Níðhöggr DNA was activating too, which would make her transition easier. It was one of the few boons their Great Serpent ancestor had granted them. Then again, she suspected her sister would have taken all this in stride regardless.

Everything except the state of her sandals that is.

“We’re going to have to find you more suitable clothes,” Sage muttered, eying Shea’s short shorts, and skimpy tank top as she squeezed the end of her own shirt and rung out water. “And what happened to the tree back home?”

“You and Håkon I’d say.” Shea winked at him over her shoulder before she smirked at Sage. “And here you were worried about me messing with the tree.”

“Not sure what you’re talking about,” Sage began, trying to sound aloof before Shea cut her off.

“Please.” She rolled her eyes. “You forget I’ve got an unfailing lust radar. If sex happens somewhere, my inner dragon knows it.” Her brow crept up slowly, amusement still flickering in her eyes. “I guess you threw caution to the wind after all.” Her appreciative gaze landed on Håkon again. “And I get it. I really do.”

“What’s going on with the tree, Shea?” Sage pressed, eager to get the conversation off of what she and Håkon had done against the ash. “Is everyone all right?”

“Everyone’s fine,” Shea said, standing again. “As to the tree, it’s unbelievable. I mean it’s seriously gorgeous now.”

“How so?” She shook her head. “Tell me it’s not bigger.”

“No, it’s not bigger.” Shea flinched. “Though it’s definitely got Pierce on edge still.”

Uh oh. “Why is that?”

“Well, it sort of turned overnight thanks to you two.”

“Turned how?” Sage began before she figured it out. “Tell me you don’t mean it changed to an autumn color. Something it shouldn’t be doing until October.”

“Yup,” Shea confirmed as she joined them. “And it’s not even yellow like ashes are supposed to be in our area but blazing orange.”

“Like this shade of orange?” Sage asked, showing her Håkon’s tattoo.

“Exactly that shade!” Sage lowered his shirt before her sister could touch it as she so clearly wanted to do.

“I have one now too,” Sage began, trailing off when she laid eyes on her tat.

“Look at that.” Shea peered at it curiously. “You’ve got the same color on yours as well.”

Color where there had been none before.
